Everything you need to know about hiring a skip with McRam Environmental, from what can go in it to collection and permits.
Frequently Asked Questions
What can I put in a skip?
Our skips can take a variety of materials, including bricks, hardcore, rubble, uncontaminated soil, household waste (such as furniture, packaging, and fittings), wood, metal, and plastic.
What can’t go in a skip?
Some materials are restricted due to safety and environmental regulations. The following items cannot be placed in a skip:
Electrical appliances and equipment (e.g., fridges, microwaves, televisions, computers, kettles, and toasters)
Gas canisters and bottles
Chemicals and solvents
Batteries
Medical or clinical waste (e.g., syringes, medicine bottles, or soiled dressings)
Oils, paints, or other liquid waste
Plasterboard
Tyres
Asbestos
If you're unsure about a specific item, get in touch and we’ll be happy to advise.
Is McRam licensed to handle waste?
Yes, McRam is fully licensed by the Environment Agency to collect and manage waste responsibly.
How is skip hire pricing calculated?
The cost of skip hire depends on the size of the skip, the type of waste being disposed of, your location, and whether a permit is required.
What does the price include?
Our skip hire service covers delivery, collection, and responsible waste processing. If a permit is needed to place a skip on a public road, we may be able to arrange this with your local council.
What happens to the waste in my skip?
McRam is committed to environmentally responsible waste management. We ensure 100% of the waste we collect is diverted from landfill, with as much as possible being recycled or processed for further use.
How full can I load the skip?
For safety reasons, skips must be level-loaded, meaning waste should not exceed the top edges of the skip. This ensures safe transport and compliance with regulations.
Do I need a permit for a skip?
If you’re placing a skip on a public road, a permit from your local council is required. Private driveways or sites usually don’t need one.
How do I apply for a permit?
Permit application processes vary by council—some require customers to apply directly, while others allow the skip provider to handle it. We can advise you on the process when you book.
How long can I keep a skip?
Standard hire periods typically range from one to 14 days, but we can discuss longer hire if needed. If your skip is on a public road, your permit will dictate how long you can keep it there.
How do I arrange for my skip to be collected?
Once your skip is full or no longer needed, just give us a call or email us, and we’ll schedule collection. Please allow at least 24 hours' notice.
